What Is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An ignition interlock device (IID), also known as a car breathalyzer or breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID), is a small electronic breathalyzer unit that is professionally wired into your vehicle’s ignition system. Before your engine starts, the device requires you to provide a breath sample. If alcohol is detected above the set threshold, the vehicle will not start.

Once the vehicle is running, the IID may also prompt random “rolling retests.” These are additional breath samples requested at intervals while you are driving, to ensure continued sobriety during your trip. All test results are recorded by the device and sent to the relevant monitoring authority as part of your compliance program.

Our IID Installation Process

Step 1

Initial Consultation. Contact our team to schedule your IID installation appointment. We will confirm your device requirements, explain the process fully, and answer any questions you have before your visit. Every conversation is handled with complete confidentiality and respect.

Step 2

Certified Installation. Our certified IID technicians install your device efficiently and precisely, making sure it is integrated with your vehicle’s ignition system without any visible damage to your interior wiring or electronics. Installation usually takes between 1 and 2 hours.

Step 3

Device Training. Before you leave our workshop, we provide complete, hands-on training on how to use your IID correctly. This includes how to give a proper breath sample, what to expect during a rolling retest, and how to handle any alerts or error messages. You will leave fully prepared and confident.

Step 4

Monitoring and Calibration. IIDs need regular calibration and data downloads to stay compliant with New Jersey state requirements. Our team offers ongoing monitoring services and calibration appointments at the required times during your compliance period.

Step 5

Once your compliance period is complete and you have received written authorization from the appropriate authority, we remove the device cleanly and completely restore your vehicle’s ignition system to its original condition.
